Repair or replace? What to consider when your boiler keeps breaking down

Another boiler breakdown can leave you wondering whether to pay for a repair or put the money towards a replacement.

There is no single answer that suits every home. The right decision depends on the fault, the boiler’s overall condition and how well your heating system meets your needs.

Before committing to either option, start by finding out what is causing the problem.

Does the boiler actually need replacing?

A heating problem does not always originate inside the boiler. Losing pressure, for example, can be caused by a leak elsewhere in the heating system. Replacing the boiler alone would not resolve that underlying issue.

Tell your engineer when the problem happens, whether any fault codes appear and what previous repairs involved. This helps establish whether the same fault is returning or several separate problems have developed.

Look at condition as well as age

Age is useful background information, but it should not be the only reason for replacing a boiler.

Ask your engineer about its condition, service history and the availability of suitable replacement parts. A repair may be reasonable if the fault can be resolved and the rest of the appliance is in sound condition.

If several components are deteriorating, repairs are becoming frequent or essential parts are unavailable, replacement deserves closer consideration.

If an engineer identifies the appliance as unsafe, follow their instructions and do not continue using it while deciding what to do next.

Compare complete quotations

Ask what is included in both the repair and replacement options. Useful questions include:

  • What has caused the fault?

  • What work is needed to put it right?

  • Are there other problems with the heating system?

  • Does the price include parts and labour?

  • What guarantee applies to the proposed work?

Consider the inconvenience of repeated breakdowns alongside the cost. Previous repair bills provide context, but the next decision should focus on the likely benefit of the work being proposed now.

Think about what your home needs

If replacement is looking likely, consider whether your current setup still suits your household. An extension, an additional bathroom or changes in hot water use may affect the choice of system.

This is also a useful opportunity to discuss alternatives, including a heat pump, and any improvements to heating controls. Your home’s layout, available space and heating requirements should guide the decision.

Get advice before deciding

Boiler repairs should be left to a suitably qualified professional. Trying to repair the appliance yourself can create safety risks and further damage.
